9 Steps of the writing process of an essay

Choose the type of essay

If you know what kind of essay you’re trying to write, it might be easier to choose a topic and set up your essay in the best way possible. The first step in writing an essay is figuring out what kind of essay you are writing. There are some main types of essays:

  • Narrative essay: An essay that tells a story or gives clear, organized information about your subject, like a story.
  • Persuasive essay: you try to persuade the reader to agree with you.
  • Expository essay: you tell the reader how to do something. For example, in an expository essay, you might explain in detail how to make a peanut butter sandwich.
  • Descriptive essay: you should focus on the details of what is going on. For example, if you wanted to write a descriptive essay about your trip to the park, you would talk about how the grass felt under your feet, what the park benches looked like, and anything else that would help the reader feel like he was there.
  • Argumentative essay: you take a stand on a controversial topic and back it up with evidence.
  • Comparison and contrast essay: you should talk about the things that are the same and the things that are different about two topics that generally fall under the same heading.
  • The solution to a problem essay: Pick a problem, make the reader care about it, offer a solution, and be ready to counter any objections.
  • Informative essays: Informative essays give facts about a subject to help the reader learn more about it.

Build up your subject

You can’t write an essay if you don’t know what to write about. Brainstorming is the process of coming up with ideas for an essay. At this stage, you just need to sit and think about ideas. You can always get more specific later, so write down everything you think of right away.

Use mind mapping or clustering to come up with ideas for essay topics. This is done by putting your topic or idea in the middle of the page and putting bubbles with similar ideas around it (clouds or clusters). Using a brainstorming exercise could help you learn more about a topic and see how its different parts fit together.

Once you have a list of possible essay topics, choose the one that best answers the essay question. You should choose a topic that is neither too broad nor too narrow. Choose the best topic from the list you made, and then start writing your essay. But before you go any further, don’t talk about these things.

Look into the subject

After you’ve finished brainstorming and picked a topic, you might need to do some research to write a good essay. You can learn more about your topic by going to the library or doing a search on the Internet. Talk to people who are experts on the subject. Keep your essay organized to find what you need when you need it. This also makes it easier to give credit to the sources you used in your final essay.

Choose how you want to write.

How you write your essay will depend on your teacher or the topic of your essay. In high school and college, you’re likely to write three different kinds of things.

  • MLA style should be used for essays in the humanities and language arts (Modern Language Association). Author, page number is the format for a citation. Most people who write in this style are in high school or college.
  • The American Psychological Association (APA) style, which uses the author-date format, was made for essays and essays in social sciences and psychology. It is the second most common way to write around the world.
  • The Chicago Manual of Style, on which Turabian is based, has two ways to write: author-date and notes-bibliography. Most college students and professionals use the author-date style, which works well for scientific essays. The notes-Biblio style, on the other hand, makes it easier to read articles in the arts and humanities.

For each type of writing, there is a certain way to put citations in the text and on the reference list.

Claim the thesis statement

Your essay’s main idea is summed up in your thesis statement. The main point of the essay can be said in one word. Your thesis statement could say, “Dogs and wolves are related.” Then, you can use this as the basis for the rest of your essay, keeping in mind that every point you make should lead back to your main thesis. Usually, you should say your thesis in the first paragraph.

The thesis statement should also be broad enough to give you enough to talk about, but not so broad that you can’t be thorough.

Write an Essay Outline

Next, you should outline your topic. This means that you should make a rough sketch of how your essay will be put together. By outlining, you can make sure that your work flows well and makes sense. If you have to write an outline for an argumentative essay, here is the best way to do it.

  • The thesis statement should come first, and then each paragraph should start with a topic sentence. This means that you should know exactly what each paragraph will be about before you write it.
  • Don’t cram too many ideas into each paragraph to keep the reader from getting confused.
  • Make sure the transitions between your paragraphs are smooth so the reader can see how the essay moves from one idea to the next.
  • Add relevant details from your research under each paragraph. Make sure that each paragraph adds to your argument and helps to build a clear, well-organized essay.
  • When assigning essays, does your teacher follow the APA style guide? If that’s the case, these examples of how to format an APA outline should help bring everything together. These examples of how to write an essay in APA style should help you when you write your own (using the advice below). Or, if your teacher wants you to use MLA format, check out these examples.

How to Write the Essay

After outlining, you can start writing. Write based on your plan, filling out your basic structure to make a complete, well-thought-out essay. You should change and reread your essay to make sure it sounds the way you want it to. Keep the following in mind:

  • Clarity, coherence, and structure all need to be looked at again.
  • The details in your paragraphs support your main point well. A topic sentence needs to be at the beginning of every sentence in a paragraph. This is the most important sentence in the paragraph because it tells readers what the other sentences will be about.
  • Check to see if everything fits. When you write an essay, transitional phrases are very important. Transitional phrases connect each paragraph to the next and keep the essay from sounding like it has no flow. You can even look at a list of transitional phrases to help you get going.
  • Read your first and last sentences again. Will the topic of your essay be clear to the person who reads it? At the beginning of your essay, you should include a hook. This is the line or lines that will hook the reader and make them want to know more.

Verify your grammar and spelling

Even if the essay is now complete, you’re not quite done. Check your writing again for mistakes and spelling mistakes. Check your work for mistakes in how it is done.

Check your writing for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Not every spelling mistake is always caught by spell check. Even if you misspell a word, like when you spell “from” as “form,” the result is still a word.

Quote, marks are another thing that a lot of people have trouble with. It’s important to give credit to your sources clearly and concisely. Follow these rules when you write or speak about quotes.

Think about how quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing are different. Lines of text that are exact copies of lines from another piece of writing should be cited. You should paraphrase when you want to tell a big part of someone else’s text in your own words. Summarizing means putting into your own words the main points of what someone else has written.
